Outside the Box

July 18, 2008

I know I’ve mentioned that I have started a vegetable garden in containers on my front porch.   This is strange for two reasons: 1) I am not a gardener  2) I hate vegetables.

Isn’t it funny how we find ourselves doing things that violate every fiber of who we think we are because it seems necessary to stretch for some reason?  My mother going para-sailing is a great example.  Here is a woman who once nearly needed a fire truck to come and get her off the roof when she went up there to help my Dad, and suddenly she’s strapping herself to a parachute attached to the back of a boat and is sailing around Town Lake like a kite.

I plan on eating these vegetables.  Only because I’m growing them.

Tell me, what have you done to step out of your box lately?  Anything interesting?

I wish I had some great adventure of really mature, God-focused character building achievement to share…it seems I’ve been doing things “differently”, but in actuality, my day-to-day has a familiar ring. but that’s it – I’m actually staying “inside” my box. my normal MO is to try new things, running from one focus to the next and never sticking with things long enough to develop consistency. so my new OTB accomplishment is consistency.

Wow, Cat. Even when you say you are staying in the box, you do it in a way that puts you out of the box. That’s a good reason to keep you in my arsenal of girlfriends. :)

If we step out of the box out here you get wet. The ocean 1 mile out is 3 miles deep and the lagoon is up to 300 feet deep. So watch your step.

Wow, this sentiment describes my last few months. I feel as if I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching and trying to get out of my box a little bit. One thing, I have vowed to start this fall is being a CASA volunteer. We shall see how it goes. I may not have the stomach for it, but I won’t know until I try! Wish me luck!
