Not The Gambler

March 14, 2008

It should come as no surprise to anyone to hear that I have been playing that Garth Brooks song over and over around here these last few days. I have really enjoyed feeling my Grandma’s encouragement to keep running, even as I mourn her absence.

Naturally, this means that Eric has also heard the song played repeatedly, though for him it is more background music.

I overheard him singing it yesterday morning and I stopped him to tell him that I really want that song played at my funeral.

Me: I want that song played at my funeral.

Eric: Okay. (At this, he goes back to the hard drive he’s tinkering on and sings a bit more) A dream is just a river…duh dah dee…you gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em…dah dah dee dah dee dah…know when to run.

Me: Wait. Are you singing “The Gambler”? Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler”?

Eric: (Thinking for a minute) Yes. Yes, I believe I am singing “The Gambler”. You better tell your Mom what song you want. Looks like I might wind up playing “The Gambler”.

Me: I certainly hope my poor mother is not alive for my funeral.

Eric: Oh yeah. I guess that’s right. Maybe you should just write it down.

Me: Maybe I will.

Me: Couldn’t you just see people’s faces? You get up there and say you want to play a song that you know was very special and inspiring to me and suddenly “The Gambler” starts up?

Eric: That sure would confuse people.

Me: It just might be worth it for the laugh. Put it on the maybe list.

Eric: Done.

Amy, if I am at your funeral, I will not let them play the Gambler. But it would make for an interesting funeral certainly.

I want bagpipes and violins and happy music at my funeral…

Amy I think “The Gambler” and a good ol’ church fight would be in fine order. Make sure to have candy for everyone. A funeral is just not a funeral without a celebration of life and laughter at the inconsequentials and trivial. If the song is not played then I will just listen to it and sing along with Eric.

I think you are right, Kevin. There must be candy. It’s just not a proper funeral without candy.

After listening to it a bit, I’m starting to think that maybe “The Gambler” would work just fine. It IS important to know when to walk away. That’s a life lesson.

LOL! I think it would be great . . . I think I may consider it for mine!
