Love and Marriage: As Told by Two Five Year Olds

April 13, 2007

I watched my friend’s two young boys yesterday, one of whom has declared his intentions to marry Mackenzie some day. As soon as he got here there was a lavish wedding, followed by the immediate boom of a large family. I got a big kick out of watching them and hearing their thoughts on marriage and child raising.
I asked Dade at one point just how many children did they have and he tells me, “Oh, we have five or maybe ten. We haven’t really counted them lately.”
Later, Mackenzie was changing the diaper of one baby and found it rather gross. “What a horrible, horrible baby I have! Do you see how disgusting this diaper is? I just can’t believe how gross my baby is!”
During a period of marital discord, Mackenzie moaned to me, “Mom! Dade just isn’t listening to me anymore!”
I watched the boys for close to eight hours, so I was able to watch this little marriage go through all the paces: courtship, wedding, babies, squabbles, break-up, reunited and more babies. It was like a marriage in a pressure cooker.
It’s days like yesterday that make me really appreciate the minutia of being a homemaker because somewhere there is a little girl to whom the mundane is a fantasy. It’s good to remember that I am living the dream.

How fun to get to see all the stages. I think it’s neat that you are the dream. Remember that one, yeah? I had a good day…

  2. Amy says:

That’s right, Sarah. I AM the dream.

  3. Sarah says:

Well after all the pain I’m not going to get allergy tested after all. It was going to cost upwards of $600. Too much. Especially since it’s well controlled by claritin.

  4. Amy says:

Yay for Claritin! It beats being stuck fifty times with tainted needles.

Kids are so great at reminding you that reality is fantastic even when its ho-hum to you. So cute!

I thought Mackenzie was engaged to my NatJ? It is so hard to keep up with young love. I feel the same way about my kids. I have not counted them lately. I should count them.

  7. Amy says:

Don’t worry. Mackenzie is very fickle. Just a month ago, she swore she was marrying her Dad. This whole Dade thing will run its course.
And do count your children. Licensed child care providers do it numerous times a day and I hear it’s a real grief saver.
